Due to an overwhelming response, Preston Memorial Hospital has decided to continue offering Free Vein Screenings indefinately.
Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from varicose veins, pain and other problems caused by venous reflux. Many factors increase the risk of developing venous reflux disease, including age, gender, family history, being overweight, multiple pregnancies, and standing or sitting for long periods of time.
The venous system is made up of a network of veins that carry blood from the body and back to the heart. Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood. Small veins near the skin drain into larger superficial veins; these connect with and empty into deep veins which then carry the blood out of the leg.
Venous reflux disease develops when the valves that keep blood flowing back to the heart become damaged or diseased.
As a result, there is less return of blood from the legs to the heart. This can lead to pain, swelling, varicose veins, leg heaviness and fatigue, restless legs, skin changes and ulcers.
The screening will be done by examining the leg veins using ultrasound. This is completely pain free and there are no needles or need for dye. From these results, Dr. Tadros will be able to determine if venous reflux disease is present and if treatment may help.
There are several treatment options for those suffering with this condition, and most insurances, including medicaid and medicare, do cover the treatment.
The screenings will be available from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays. To schedule your appointment please call Michele at 304-791-3738. |
