REGION III OFFICE ON WOMEN’S HEALTH
AWARDS GRANT FUNDING
FOR PRESTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S
SMOKING CESSATION PROJECT

KINGWOOD-Preston Memorial Hospital (PMH) announces the receipt of a $5,000 grant from the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in Region III of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The mission of OWH is to promote the improvement of the health status of all women within five states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland) and the District of Columbia. They offer financial assistance in the form of a grant to projects which address one or more of the following priority women’s health subject areas:
· Cardiovascular Disease
· Diabetes/Obesity/Physical Activity
· HIV+/AIDS
· Cancer-specifically lung
· Mental Health
· Domestic Violence

PMH Grant Writer Jennifer Funk said that, “tobacco use accounts for about one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States and is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. West Virginia has the highest smoking rate among pregnant women in the country (27.3%); nearly triple the U.S. rate of 10.2%.”

According to PMH Chief Executive Officer Michael Thompson, “the Preston Memorial Hospital Smoking Cessation Project was developed to increase smoking cessation in adult women in Preston County and hence, decrease countywide chronic respiratory illness and lung cancer.”

Funk said that, “grant funds will be used to purchase educational materials for the purpose of conducting smoking cessation and lung cancer awareness activities for our community.”

Thompson said that, “PMH would like to thank OWH and DHHS for this wonderful opportunity to help meet this important need.”

PMH is a state-licensed, 25-bed Critical Access Hospital located in Kingwood, West Virginia. Preston Memorial is recognized statewide for its leadership in rural health care—including its Preston Birth Center, 24-hour emergency department, and exceptional support services like respiratory therapy, diagnostic imaging, full service laboratory, home health, and physical therapy services.
