Philosophy of Nursing

The nurses at PMH view nursing as the art and science of human caring. We practice ethically and holistically in accordance with WV Nursing Laws, the WV Department of Health, and nursing standards described by the American Nurses’ Association. Our practice is based on sound scientific principles that define our standards of care. We embrace the spirit of inquiry and the allocation of resources that support scientific discovery and the utilization of research findings. Nursing practice at PMH clearly reflects our commitment to excellence and support of the organization’s mission and vision.

We recognize and support the unique contributions made by all nurses in the delivery of quality healthcare. Standards of professional performance are not static, but reflect changes in society, technology, and the discipline. We embrace the responsibility for lifelong learning which promotes the professional nurse through novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert levels of growth and development. We advocate innovative nursing practice which facilitates positive patient outcomes and provides an environment of autonomy and an atmosphere of caring. We value and respect the knowledge and skills of all interdisciplinary team members and incorporate their collaborative contributions to meet the needs of patients and their families.

We believe each patient is a unique individual worthy of respect, dignity and compassion. We celebrate cultural diversity and respect individual rights to privacy and confidentiality and the rights of patients and families to participate in the care planning process. Care is approached through attention to the physical, psychological, socio-cultural, developmental, and spiritual dimensions of each individual. We assist patients to achieve their human potential by promoting or restoring health or by supporting them to achieve a peaceful death. We apply the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to afford patients and their families efficient, effective and economical healthcare.

We value our leadership role in the organization and the wider community. Our practice is population-focused as we assume responsibility for the health of surrounding communities where our patients live and work. We endorse the role of the nurse as a good corporate and community citizen and responsible steward of resources. We participate in hospital committee work, scholarly endeavors, professional organizations, and the political process as it relates to healthcare.
