WEST VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN RESOURCES AWARDS GRANT FUNDING FOR
PRESTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL’S PATIENT SAFETY EFFORTS
KINGWOOD-Preston Memorial Hospital (PMH) announces the receipt of a $12,000 grant from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) Bureau for Public Health Office of Community Health Systems West Virginia Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility program. This program offers financial assistance in the form of a grant to hospitals that have been certified as Critical Access Hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. PMH Chief Executive Officer Michael Thompson said that, “quality and safety are key components in providing patient care and Preston Memorial Hospital is committed to advancing those issues.”
According to PMH Grant Writer Jennifer Funk, “the funds will be used to print patient safety educational materials for the public, to purchase a video camera for recording mock drills, training sessions, and procedures; to send staff to symposiums/conferences on patient safety, to buy an OB/GYN childbirth simulator to help train staff on how to deal with emergency situations in labor and delivery, to obtain an adult IV training arm mannequin for staff to get hands on practice with intravenous cannulation, infusions, intramuscular injections, and drawing blood; and to cover costs associated with the hospital’s Occurrence Reporting and Management web-based system, which allows for reporting designed to support and increase information about adverse events in order to improve patient safety.”
Funk said that, “the award provides an opportunity for the hospital to expand its capabilities to serve the public. We would like to thank WVDHHR for this opportunity.”
PMH is a state-licensed, 25-bed Critical Access Hospital located in Kingwood, West Virginia. Preston Memorial is recognized statewide for its leadership in rural health care—including its Preston Birth Center, 24-hour emergency department, and exceptional support services like respiratory therapy, diagnostic imaging, full service laboratory, home health, and physical therapy services.
